Every community has people who quietly make a difference. They aren’t chasing recognition or headlines\u2014they’re showing up, listening, connecting people, and finding ways to leave their community better than they found it. For Nick Salazar, that commitment has become the foundation of both his career and his life’s work.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

A lifelong Muscatine resident, Nick wears many hats. He is a husband, father, supply chain manager at Kraft Heinz, researcher, photographer, filmmaker, community advocate, and currently a candidate for the Iowa House. While those roles may seem unrelated at first glance, they are all connected by one simple purpose: helping people feel seen, heard, and valued.<\/p>\n

That purpose began long before he entered the workforce.<\/p>\n

Nick’s family came to Iowa in the 1960s from Texas to work in the Heinz tomato fields. Like many Latino families of that generation, they arrived with hopes of creating a better future through determination and hard work. Those sacrifices laid the foundation for generations to come and shaped the values Nick carries with him today.<\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up seeing people work incredibly hard and still face challenges,\u201d he says. \u201cWhether it was housing, healthcare, language barriers, or simply having their voices heard, I realized early on that many families needed someone willing to listen and help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Growing up in Muscatine gave Nick a deep appreciation for community. It taught him that success isn’t measured only by personal achievements but by the impact someone has on the people around them. His parents instilled the belief that if you have the ability to help someone, you simply do it. You don’t wait to be asked, and you don’t expect recognition.<\/p>\n

Those lessons continue to guide every part of his life.<\/p>\n

Nick’s professional journey began much like many others\u2014with his first job at Hy-Vee as a teenager. It was there he learned accountability, responsibility, and the importance of every role within a team.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether you’re stocking shelves or helping customers, people depend on you,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Soon after, Nick joined Kraft Heinz, where he has spent nearly two decades building a career in supply chain management. Throughout the years, he has advanced into leadership while helping solve complex operational challenges. Although supply chain management may seem worlds away from community advocacy, Nick sees a clear connection.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’ve always been fascinated by people,\u201d he explains. \u201cIn supply chain, you’re solving systems problems. In research, you’re trying to understand why communities experience certain challenges. Through photography and filmmaking, you’re telling stories that connect people. They’re different paths, but they’re all about understanding people and improving systems.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside of his career at Kraft Heinz, Nick found another calling through community service.<\/p>\n

His involvement with organizations like LULAC, the Diversity Service Center of Iowa, and the University of Iowa’s Iowa Vital Voices Project opened doors to research that centered on the experiences of Latino families and other underserved communities. Rather than speaking for people, Nick focused on creating opportunities for individuals to share their own experiences.<\/p>\n

He quickly realized that stories could accomplish something data alone could not.<\/p>\n

A photograph could preserve history. An interview could capture a lifetime of experiences. Community research could influence decisions that improve lives. Together, they became powerful tools for change.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere wasn’t one single moment where I knew this was what I was meant to do,\u201d Nick reflects. \u201cIt happened through conversations with community members, hearing immigration stories, interviewing elders, and watching research influence decision-makers. That’s when I realized storytelling could create real change.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

That realization inspired him to launch his own consulting business, bringing together research, photography, documentary filmmaking, and community engagement. Through his work, he helps organizations and communities tell authentic stories that inform public policy, preserve history, and strengthen connections between people.<\/p>\n

It’s work that requires both creativity and empathy.<\/p>\n

While many people know Nick through his advocacy or public service, fewer realize that photography and filmmaking have become some of his greatest passions. Behind every image is an opportunity to celebrate culture, document history, and remind people that their experiences matter.<\/p>\n

His work often focuses on stories that might otherwise be overlooked\u2014stories of resilience, family, heritage, and everyday people making extraordinary contributions to their communities.<\/p>\n

Throughout his journey, Nick has also learned that leadership isn’t about having all the answers.<\/p>\n

Instead, he believes leadership begins with listening.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeadership is creating opportunities for other people to succeed,\u201d he says. \u201cIt’s less about being in front and more about helping others discover their own voice.\u201d<\/p>\n

That philosophy has guided him through every role he has held, from mentoring others in the workplace to introducing community members to valuable networks and encouraging new leaders to step forward.<\/p>\n

Like many first-generation professionals, Nick admits his path wasn’t always clear.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere wasn’t a roadmap,\u201d he says. \u201cI had to learn leadership, networking, and public speaking through experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

There were moments of self-doubt along the way, but each challenge reinforced an important lesson: authenticity matters more than perfection.<\/p>\n

He also learned that trying to do everything alone isn’t sustainable.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeadership isn’t about carrying everything yourself,\u201d he says. \u201cIt’s about building teams that accomplish more together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, one of Nick’s biggest challenges is balancing the many roles he plays. Between family, his career at Kraft Heinz, research projects, community leadership, creative work, and public service, finding balance is an ongoing process.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don’t think anyone has completely mastered balance,\u201d he says with a smile. \u201cIt’s really about being intentional with the time you have.\u201d<\/p>\n

Through it all, his family remains his greatest source of strength and motivation.<\/p>\n

When asked what accomplishment makes him most proud, Nick doesn’t point to awards or titles. Instead, he talks about preserving oral histories, publishing research alongside the University of Iowa, and helping community voices find a place in conversations where they have often been absent.<\/p>\n

Those projects represent something much bigger than individual success.<\/p>\n

They ensure future generations will understand the stories, sacrifices, and contributions of the people who came before them.<\/p>\n

Nick’s relationship with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce also grew from his passion for community organizing. Through his work with LULAC, he recognized the importance of supporting Latino-owned businesses and creating stronger connections throughout eastern Iowa.<\/p>\n

Since becoming involved with the Chamber, he has found opportunities to expand his network, collaborate with fellow leaders, and continue building partnerships that benefit both businesses and communities.<\/p>\n

For Nick, organizations like the Hispanic Chamber play a vital role because they help create access.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany people don’t lack talent,\u201d he explains. \u201cThey lack opportunity and connections. The Chamber helps bridge that gap.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, Nick hopes to continue combining storytelling, research, public service, and leadership in ways that strengthen communities across Iowa. Whether through documenting Latino history, mentoring future leaders, growing his creative studio, or serving in public office, his goal remains the same as it has always been\u2014to leave people and communities stronger than he found them.<\/p>\n

His advice to young professionals is refreshingly simple.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon’t chase titles,\u201d he says. \u201cThe relationships you build will matter far more than the words on your r\u00e9sum\u00e9.\u201d<\/p>\n

Perhaps that philosophy best captures Nick’s journey.<\/p>\n

His success has never been measured by one position, one project, or one accomplishment.<\/p>\n

Instead, it has been built through relationships, service, curiosity, and a genuine belief that every person has a story worth telling.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there’s one thing I’ve learned,\u201d Nick says, \u201cit’s that success is never an individual accomplishment. Every opportunity I’ve had came because someone believed in me, opened a door, shared advice, or trusted me with their story.\u201d<\/p>\n

And if there’s one message he hopes readers remember, it’s one that reflects both his own journey and the mission that continues to guide his work every day:<\/p>\n
